SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle advanced his claims to become world champion in 2016 with a magnificent win in the Polish Grand Prix at a scorching Gorzow on Saturday.

Doyle has now closed Greg Hancock's lead in the world series to just seven points with four more rounds remaining.

In a scintillating final in Poland the Australian just held off reigning champ Tai Woffinden through the last two bends to take his second Grand Prix victory.

A resurgent Nicki Pedersen, Doyle and home favourite Bartosz Zmarzlik were among the early leaders during the qualifying races of the meeting, while Woffinden made life difficult for himself with two third places.

Poole's Chris Holder was also in the mix thanks to two fine wins.

Such was the competition that it required 10 points simply to qualify for the semi finals.

The first semi saw the winners of eight world titles up against the new pretender, Doyle, who followed home Woffinden leaving Hancock and Pedersen at the back.

In the second semi, Zmarzlik edged out Holder, with Fredrik Lindgren and Piotr Pawlicki failing to progress.

Doyle and Woffinden swapped the lead continuously with the Aussie making one audacious pass on lap three but he still required one last overtaking manoeuvre off the last bend into the short run-in to snatch the win.
