RAY PEER, an 89-year-old member at Minchinhampton Golf Club, shot two remarkable rounds of golf in competitions recently.
His gross score of 92 off the yellow tees on the Avening course earned him 10th place overall in the club's Senior Open.
And a few days later he shot a gross 93 – off the white tees on the Cherington course – to finish fifth in the September Seniors Stableford.
To shoot a score of three or four over your age is something golfers aspire to but rarely achieve. Ray's last two rounds have resulted in his handicap being cut from 23 to 22. Congratulations Ray.
The Senior Open proved a huge success with 160 players – some travelling from as far as Pontypridd and Winchester – taking part.
The winner was Derek Bean from Neath Golf Club who scored 41 points.
The top three players from Minchinhampton were Philip Carter (fifth, 38 points), senior captain Terry Dwight (ninth, 37pts) and Ray Peer (10th, 37pts).
A strong field of 84 players took part in the September Stableford.
RESULTS: 1, Mike Williams (Div One) 40pts; 2, Jim Gregins (Div Two) 39pts; 3, Chris Sadler (Div One); 38pts on countback; 4, Terry Dwight (Div One) 38pts; 5, Ray Peer (Div Two) 37pts; 6, Mike Townsend (Div Two) 37pts.
