Lighthouse CDCA T20 Cup Final

Malmesbury 131 all out

Bourton Vale 132-5

BOURTON VALE chased down the total set by Malmesbury to win the 2016 CDCA T20 Cup at the finals day hosted by Slaughters CC.

Winning the toss and batting, Malmesbury set off rapidly, reaching 50 off seven overs before Bourton’s skipper removed the dangerous Ed Wilkins and leg spinner Cam Taylor (4-10) took wickets to slow the run rate. The wicket of Malmesbury’s George Royle involved a stunning boundary catch taken at full length by Charlie Garratt.

At 98-8 off only 14 overs Malmesbury were in danger of falling well short of a defendable total but wicket keeper Michael Collison rebuilt the innings which finished on 131.

In reply, Bourton started steadily but lost wickets regularly to catches in the deep.

When Jack Ward had Garratt caught, Bourton still required 73 off nine overs with six wickets in hand.

At this point skipper Ben Hughes along with Cook edged Bourton towards the target before unleashing a rush of boundaries knowing they had wickets in hand.

Hughes finished on 41 not out and Cook was only out to a stunning one-handed take by the Malmesbury wicket keeper with just five runs required.

The winning boundary was aptly struck by man-of-the-match Hughes for Bourton to register their second win in this competition in recent years.

Earlier, Langford had set a mammoth 235 to win the Plate final against Oaksey.

Much praise should go to Slaughters United Cricket Club who hosted the event superbly. Chairman Nick Hayward and his team of groundsmen, bar staff, BBQ cooks and DJs ensured a fabulous day.

The ground looked a picture and the wicket played beautifully. The weather even played its part by not raining too much!

Special thanks to the umpires Alan Jennings and Carl Senior for ensuring the two games ran smoothly and also to Standard columnist John Light and his wife Penny for their generous sponsorship of the whole competition.

Some very fine cricket was played and the crowd created a fantastic atmosphere.
