Fairford Town 2

Cheltenham Civil Service 0

FAIRFORD Town made it two wins in a week with a 2-0 pre-season home victory over Cheltenham Civil Service on Saturday afternoon.

In blistering conditions – that saw the sides take drinks breaks in each half – the home side ran out victors thanks to two second-half strikes.

After a slow start, predictable due to the high temperatures, the pace quickened when Jack Ellis saw his sublime chip rebound off the bar with Nathan Gambling on hand to follow up, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The visitors went close on 23 minutes with Ben Mitchell getting down low to prevent what would have been the opener. Further chances came with Gambling and Ellis both going close before the half-time whistle.

Five minutes after the restart, Steve Hall’s cross was flicked on by Gambling into the path of Ellis who netted his second goal of the week.

Several changes followed after the hour and one of the replacements, Ian Ward opened his pre-season account with a close-range finish on 72 minutes following good work from fellow new recruit Josh Morse on the left.

Substitute Jason Milhench was twice denied in the closing exchanges but the two-goal cushion proved enough on a searing afternoon.

Fairford Town make the trip to Cinderford on Tuesday evening before a journey to Surrey side Knaphill on Saturday, which will see the reserves also make the trip as part of a double-header fixture.

On Saturday the reserves opened the fixture programme with a 4-2 victory at neighbours Hatherop with new signings Leonardo, Mellor and Bruno among the scorers.
