STEVE YATES stormed to victory in the Vets 40+ category of the Titan Middle Distance Triathlon held deep in the Brecon Beacons of South Wales.

Yates finished in a time of 5hr 11min, more than 12 minutes ahead of his nearest rival in the Vets section.

The Daglingworth-based triathlete, who is supported by the Ride 24/7 cycle shop in Cirencester and also acts as an athlete ambassador for the Cotswold Leisure Centre, finished fourth overall.

He missed a place on the podium by only 31 seconds.

The Titan Triathlon organised by DB Max is fast becoming established as one of the toughest middle distance triathlons in the UK. The distances are: 1.9km open water swim/110km bike ride/21km run.

“There were around 250 competitors on the start line but less than 200 finishers which shows the severity of the course,” said Yates.

“The bike course is mountainous and has more than 5,000 feet of climbing, including a 5km time trial section ascent of Iron Mountain, while the half-marathon three finale finale features more than 1,000 feet of ascent.”

Steve competes next in the Cotswold 226 Triathlon – a full Ironman distance event (swim 3.8km/bike 180km/run 42km) – on Sunday, July 17.
