WE were delighted to get the win on Friday night – especially with it being against Somerset, our local rivals, writes Gareth Roderick.

It was an electric atmosphere in front of 12,000 fans at home and the adrenalin was definitely pumping at the end.

With 14 needed off the last over I was just trying to figure out where I was going to get the runs from. It helped when AJ (Andrew Tye) hit the first one out of the park so it was in eight off five – it brought it down to my level a bit and it was brilliant to be able to help get us over the line.

We are currently tied for second in the group and our aim is to try and qualify for the next round as quickly as we can. Once you get on a roll in T20 you just try to keep it going. We have won some tight games this year which we might have lost last season. I think that is down to the belief we took from coming through some close finishes in the Royal London One-Day last year.

We have a pretty tried and trusted formula that works for us and we will try and stick to that. Guys like Benny (Howell), Smudge (Tom Smith) and Kieran (Noema-Barnett) have shown how good they are bowling in the middle overs and that is a real strength for us.

I think one of the main positives is that with both bat and ball we have got guys that put their hand up and perform when we need them to. In the past we might have been a bit over-reliant on the Gidman brothers or on Maxy (Michael Klinger) but now there are a number of players that can step up if others don’t perform.

I am pretty happy with my own game at the moment. Playing all formats and being captain in the red ball competition it has been tough but I’ve enjoyed it. I think being captain in the four-day stuff has made me feel more confident to help Maxy in white ball cricket and offer an opinion in the field. It has been nice to chip in with a few runs at the end to help us win a couple of matches.

Last weekend we had a rare couple of days off which was nice and meant that we were able to celebrate the win over Somerset. I managed to get to the driving range, which I find a good way to help me switch off. I also met a load of the boys for breakfast and we had a few battles on the PlayStation before coming back in to train on Tuesday.

We have a big weekend ahead of us with Hampshire and Sussex on Saturday and Sunday. If we can come away with two wins we will put ourselves in a great position to qualify for the quarter finals.
