CIRENCESTER CC hosted a fun six-a-side tournament for the fifth year on Saturday, the aim being to get a number of lapsed cricketers playing for fun in a safe environment using windballs and outfield wickets.

Eight teams contested two groups leading to Plate and Cup semi finals for all teams.

The holders Baptist Boom retained their crown, playing a sub-continental brand of cricket full of guile and hard hitting which swept all before them.

The Plate final was won by The Has-Beens, a collection of veteran cricketers (male and female) supplemented by youth (male and female). The team’s ages ranged from 14 to 68, surely the essence of cricket for fun.

A bar and BBQ provided sustenance for all; thanks to the tireless Anna Jackson for her efforts.

The competition sat perfectly alongside the more serious endeavours of the first XI against Kingsholm on the main pitch and showed that cricket can be a game for all.

The 2017 six-a-side competition is to be expanded to 12 teams playing on three pitches.
