Cirencester Athletics and Triathlon Club
Berkeley Power Station 10km, road
SIMON CAMPBELL gained a hard-earned second place on the roads around Berkeley power station on a wet Monday evening.
New club member Kate Sackett added more success to her week as she knocked half a minute off a 15-year-old FV55 club record when finishing first FV55.
RESULTS: 1, Anthony Glover (Westbury Harriers) 33.45; 2, Simon Campbell 35.50; 81, Kate Sackett 44.18 (first FV55, club FV55 record); 120, Tim Ingham 47.10; 214, Barbara Thomas 54.42; 254, Ruth Fulford. 305 finished.
Cotswold Sprint Triathlon, Cotswold Water Park, 400m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
IT was a highly successful week for Ian Barrett who finished seventh and first MV40 in the Cotswold Sprint Triathlon, having been seventh and second MV40 earlier in the week at the Castle Combe Midweek Duathlon.
Gethin Musk also did well in the triathlon in a sunny Cotswold Water Park and it was good to see that Bob Ferris, who retired from the Cirencester AC committee recently after dedicated service to the club having helped to found it some 30 years ago, remains a fine competitor as he finished third MV60.
But others including Ionel Iancu and Carol Clarke (who did not run due to injury) struggled, particularly with a crowded and difficult swim.
RESULTS: 1, Jordan Frapwell (Stroud AC) (5.35; 28.16; 15.42) 50.51; 7, Ian Barrett (7.06; 28.59; 16.28) 54.16 for first MV40; 41, Gethin Musk (7.20; 29.02; 20.32) 58.47; 103, Adam Powell (8.47; 31.49; 20.55) 1:03.36; 198, Bob Ferris (8.23; 33.25; 26.58) 1:10.47 for third MV60; 210, Ionel Iancu (7.55; 39.29; 20.14) 1:11.34. 322 finished.
Castle Combe Midweek Duathlon, 2-mile run, 10-mile bike, 2-mile run
RESULTS: 1, Oli Stenning (Swindon Harriers) (10.26; 20.56; 10.45) 43.21; 7, Ian Barrett (10.57; 22.56; 11.18) 46.30 for second MV40. 99 finished.
Preseli Ultrabeast, Newport, S Wales, 32 miles/6,000ft climbing, trail
JAMES THOMAS demonstrated total recovery from his Manchester Marathon by finishing second in the very demanding Preseli Ultrabeast. With over 6,000 feet of ascent, this 32-mile off-road event is certainly not for the faint hearted. Wife Liz sensibly took a (slightly) easier option – The Preseli Beast – with a mere 4,700 ft of climbing over 24 miles.
RESULTS: 1, Gancho Slavor (Aberystwyth AC) 4:56.38; 2, James Thomas 5:24.34. 55 finished.
Preseli Beast, Newport, S Wales, 24 miles/4,700ft climbing, trail
RESULTS: 1, Marcus Pinker (MDC) 3:28.32; 57, Liz Thomas 6:07.25. 57 finished.
Stroud Beer Race, Minchinhampton Common, 7.2 miles road
EARLIER in the week Kate Sackett was third lady and first FV55 in the Stroud Beer Race – setting herself high standards to maintain and giving fellow FV55 Barbara Thomas tough competition.
RESULTS: 1, Dan Robinson (Stroud & District AC) 40.37; 29, Kate Sackett 53.06 for third lady/first FV55; 59, Barbara Thomas 1:08.45. 62 finished.
