Cirencester League Div One

Wroughton Reserves 2 Oaksey 1

WITH fellow strugglers Siddington Sports pulling off a perhaps unexpected victory over Malmesbury Victoria Reserves, Oaksey’s narrow defeat at Wroughton consigned the away side to bottom place in division one.

Oaksey returned to this division 20 seasons ago and have avoided the basement place ever since.

Wroughton had more of the attacking play in the early stages and scored through Lee Curtis after eight minutes.

Oaksey were handicapped somewhat with Jimmy Horwood going off shortly afterwards and then Chappie Trimble suffered an ankle injury, although continuing after treatment despite being in obvious pain.

Substitute Kyle Fitzsimmons shored up the defence and with Chris Brookes moving into midfield, the visitors began to get into the game, particularly in midfield, although they were unable to find the final shot.

The second period saw Oaksey coming into the game but against the run of play Nick MacKey made it 2-0. From then on Oaksey had more shots than they have probably had in any 30-minute spell this season and with 13 minutes to go veteran defender Paul Rose pulled one back – but it was too little, too late.

Manager Dave Littler, forced to play between the sticks in this game, will have a lot to think about during the close season. The side potentially is good but probably needs the kind of physically imposing target man some other sides have had this season.
