ROGER WEST, who founded and ran Fairford Fury basketball team until he was 70 years old, has turned his attention to a more genteel sport – golf.
The local inventor and entrepreneur is one of the dwindling band of members who is trying to breath new life into Cricklade House Golf Club.
The club, which has existed for more than 40 years but came close to being shut down earlier this year, is run jointly by Cricklade House Hotel and its 16 active members.
West, a recent convert to golf, said: "It's a decent little nine-hole golf course but it certainly needs new members, particularly ladies and young players.
"It has a new constitution and committee and the course is greatly improved and has approved status from the Wiltshire Golf Union.
"Most weekends there are competitions and soon Cricklade will fulfil an annual fixture with Oaksey Park GC.
"At just £300 a year membership is a steal."
