MORE than 400 boys, aged 10 to 18, will be taking part in the annual 7s tournament on Sunday May 1 at Cirencester RFC which is now in its 39th year.

The hugely anticipated competition includes teams from more than 18 clubs across the county and beyond and it is believed to be the longest running continuous competition of its kind in the country.

Dave Reeves, the event organiser and chairman of the Minis & Juniors section at Cirencester RFC, said: “We are thrilled with the uptake and registration this year when we are putting on a day of 7s rugby for more than seven different age groups.

"Thanks to the M&J volunteers who are running the event with me. Their support now and on the day is essential for us to put on such an event of this size.

“Alongside the youth rugby, there will also be a senior game against touring side Crediton RFC which kicks off at 12.30pm.

"Our relationship with Crediton goes way back, we have a good history with the club and welcome them back to Gloucestershire.”

Backing the competition are headline sponsors Tanners Solicitors LLP who have also provided the match balls.

Tanners associate Richard Lloyd said: “It’s our second year of sponsoring this great youth event and to see so many lads playing rugby and enjoying our great sport is fantastic. We are pleased to help continue this great tradition.”

Cirencester also thank their other sponsors – Seager Welding and local coach firm Alexcars – for their generous donations.

Last year the principal trophy of the tournament, the Under-18s/Colts Hugh Evans Memorial Shield, was won by Ledbury.

The first matches start at 9.30am with the closing awards and presentations at 5pm.

The clubhouse and bar is open all day for refreshments and a BBQ is serving food. All are welcome to enjoy the Bank Holiday festivities at The Whiteway.
