JOHNATHAN BOWMAN proved an unstoppable force at the Welsh Masters showjumping competition held at the David Broome Event Centre in Crick near Chepstow.

Bowman, who competes regularly both in the UK and abroad from his base at Leigh near Cricklade, took two of the top prizes against some of the country's leading riders with wins for Marcel de Rosier in the 1.25cm NAF final and Enamorado in the 1.20cm NAF final.

Evergreen 16-year-old Marcel de Rosier saw off his juniors with a splendid jumping display.

Having finished fifth in Thursday's 1.25cm qualifier the French-bred chestnut was drawn to go first of the 50 finalists.

Johnathan has owned Marcel for 12 years guiding him through the ranks and winning the six-year-old championship at this same show 10 years ago.

The pair set a fast pace with some quick turns and more importantly completed a clear round.

Bowman had to look on helplessly as 48 rivals tried and failed to match his time with no jumping faults.

The 50th and final rider did beat Marcel's time by a second but crucially had one fence down so Bowman was crowned champion.

For a horse still to be at the top of his game aged 16 reflects tremendous credit on Johnathan.

The roles were reversed in the 1.20cm final with Bowman and Enamorado going almost last in the jump-off.

This seven-year-old bay, owned long term supporter Steve Valente-Smith, is a new recruit to the Bowman stable, having joined just two months ago.

Enamorado produced a double clear in the qualifier to secure third place and a ticket to the final.

The course for the final was set to the maximum heights and widths – a tough task for a young horse.

But Enamorado flew round the course flawlessly in a time two seconds faster than the rest of the field.

On Friday, Johnathan had also competed the chestnut mare Runkum Little Fee, owned by young rider Millie Hackeborn, in the 1.15cm class.

The pair jumped a double clear leading the timed section until the last two riders to secure third place and another ticket for a championship final.

But it was decided not to push this inexperienced mare into the championship class just yet and she was saved for another day.

Johnathan was presented with his awards by the legendary David Broome himself before taking centre stage with a lap of honour.

Johnathan is supported by NAF, the UK's largest manufacturer of horse nutritional products, Woof Wear, a manufacturer of equine leg protectors, Champion riding hats and Toggi riding wear.
