SWINDON Wildcats netminder Stevie Lyle has been added to the full GB squad ahead of the pre-Olympic qualifiers.

The 36-year-old Welshman began his association with the senior GB side during the 1995-96 season and to still be involved two decades later, is a great testament to the his ability, dedication and professionalism.

Former Wildcats bench-coach Pete Russell now in charge of the GB Senior side, named his original 22-man roster back on January 14.

However, Lyle has now been called up to replace netminder Stephen Murphy in the squad that will take on Italy, Netherlands and Serbia in Cortina between February 11 and February 14.

Lyle will therefore be absent from this weekend's three Wildcats games against Basingstoke Bison (Friday, February 12), MK Lightning (Saturday, February 13) and the Bison again on Sunday, February 14.

Speaking after the news was announced, Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell said: "We are all very happy for Stevie with his call-up.

"He is a great goalie and has been nothing short of exceptional this season.

"We all wish him and the rest of the team the best of luck for the upcoming tournament."

Forward Tomasz Malasinski will also be unavailable for the Cats fixtures this weekend, having been called up to the Polish national side for their games against Estonia, Lithuania and Hungary in the same qualifying competition.
