Malmesbury Vics 4 Shrewton United 2

FOURTH played second in this top-of the-table Wiltshire Premier League clash but it was Malmesbury Vics who upset the form book with a convincing home win.

Despite having their first game in two months it was the Vics who were much quicker into their stride, dominating the opening period.

In the third minute a challenge from behind on Ed Wilkins in the visitors' area, brought a huge penalty appeal, but it was waved away by the official.

Constant pressure on the Shrewton defence brought success in the 23rd minute, when Clint Walker rose highest to nod home a Sam Jenner corner.

The lead was doubled in the 35th minute when Wilkins was fouled in the box; this time the decision was given and he picked himself up to score from the spot. At that point the Vics were cruising but a lack of concentration three minutes later allowed the visitors back into the game, when Teren Perry was left totally unmarked to score easily after good work from Dean Foot.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first, with the home side looking to press home their advantage and Shrewton looking dangerous on the break.

The lead was increased in the 58th minute when Wilkins scored again from the spot after Danny Cook had been bundled over inside the box.

Shrewton threw more players forward and were rewarded in the 80th minute with a bizarre goal.

A terrific strike from 30 yards by Jason Brice crashed against the bar, rebounding on to the back of a bemused Joe Snell in the home goal and into the net for an own goal.

The Vics regained their two-goal cushion seven minutes later when Jack Duckers ran on to a through ball and finished confidently.

Duckers was denied a second goal at the death as the referee blew for time just as his strike crossed the line.

Vics MoM: Allan Webb.
