CIRENCESTER head pro Ed Goodwin came close to winning a Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA Medal for the third week in a row at The Mendip Golf Club.

Goodwin's resurgence in form saw him take top spot at both Cleveden and Chipping Sodbury but his level par 71 was good enough only for a share of third place with David Dixon, who has just earned a place back on the main European Tour.

The front runners this week – with a pair of 68s – were familiar faces, Ross Langdon, formerly of South Cerney Golf Club and Senior Tour player George Ryall.

Langdon took full advantage of the absence of his nearest rivals to create a healthy lead in the Total Triumph Order of Merit.

Langdon’s nearest challengers at the start of the day, Louis Boston and Dan Toogood, were both away on PGA training courses.

Langdon was untroubled by a facial injury, caused when he lost an argument with a piece of wood during the week, as he compiled a card showing five birdies and just a pair of bogeys on the way to his second win of the season.

Nick Ellis of Naunton Downs GC finished seventh with a two-over-par 73.
