October Medal

THE benign weather conditions again resulted in some excellent scoring in the October Medal held at Cirencester Golf Club on Saturday.

Division One was won by Nicholas Brown, one of the season’s most consistent players, with a sparkling net 67, one shot ahead of rival Darren Robison‘s net 68. Chris McIntosh was third, a further shot back on net 69.

Competition was also tight in Division Two with Andy Brereton and Dick Tugwell locking horns on nett 69, the latter losing top spot on countback. Senior John King finished third with a net 70.

In Division Three, youngster Luke Hopegood matched the best of the day score with an excellent net 67 to ease into top spot ahead of Terry Johnson (net 68). Terry Smith finished in third with a net 70.

Darren Robison returned the best gross score of the day with a gross 71.

Rabbits Cup

RICHARD HOPEGOOD has won the Rabbits Cup – for players who have never played below 19 handicap – for the second year running.

Richard beat Graham Hewitt 6&4 and the handicap secretary is likely to ensure he will ineligible to enter in future years. Enjoy the moment while you can, Richard.

Cirencester Mixed 2

Chippenham Mixed 5

ON another beautiful autumn day at Cirencester GC the very first mixed match was played against Chippenham GC.

The result, however, was not quite so good for Cirencester as the team were well beaten.

First off were the president Gordon Robbins and Julie Clough, one of our very low handicap ladies, and although they were ahead in the early holes, the opposition won through right at the end.

Martin and Penny Taylor were next and Penny had what she described as an off day.

Next came Jeremy and Jill Briggs with a fine 2-up win, but James and Katie Leith could not produce a similar result.

Richard and Teresa North, who have started playing for us recently, put up a gallant fight but unfortunately also lost.

David Michael and Sue Hodgson did then register an excellent 2-up victory.

Finally Tony Gatrell and Christine Clark's match finished at the 15th with a loss. But at least Christine had the pleasure of winning the nearest the pin at the 13th so she received a bottle of wine for the prize.

A relaxed dinner followed with much hilarity, so it was a pleasant day for all.

The final mixed match this year is at Ogbourne Downs GC on October 18 and a couple more pairs are still needed.
