Dorset & Wilts Vase Quarter Final

Minety 37 Supermarine 12

MINETY inflicted Supermarine’s first defeat of the season in the Vase Quarter Final, running out 37-12 victors, writes Graham Cooke.

Playing downhill in the first half, Minety raced into a 10–0 lead with tries from Jack Ward and Steve Brown. A Garin Garland penalty extended the lead to 13 points before top-of-the-table Supermarine scored a pushover try just before half-time.

Minety extended their lead in the 43rd minute when Matt Roberts ended a flowing move from the backs to score a try with Garland converting.

Minety had to defend for lengthy periods of the game and lost Jack Ward to the sin bin and Ashley Windle after a clash of heads but, against the run of play, Gareth Graham scored for the home side after a break out and Garland slotted the conversion.

Another Garland penalty extended the lead to 30 before Brown broke through to score his second try of the game, again converted by Garland.

A late Supermarine try and conversion saw the game end 37-12 to the hosts.

Minety coach Andy Ward said: “It was great to win over a Supermarine team who have won all their league matches this season and who only came down into the league from the Southern Division last season.

"In patches we played some really great rugby but we need to add consistency and improve our discipline.”

Double try scorer Steve Brown was delighted with his performance and the tries. “Both were really well set up by the backs," he said. "I thought it was our best performance of the season; we were so aggressive in defence.”
