Mixed Family Foursomes Matchplay – Burhill Golf Club

CONGRATULATIONS to the mother-son combination of Alison and Mike Kelly who put Cirencester GC on the map by winning the Mixed Family Foursomes Matchplay tournament at Burhill Golf Club, an open event that has been played since 1937 and attracts entrants from all over the country.

Thirty pairs in total took part made up of fathers & daughters and mothers & sons. The Cirencester pairing played five matches in three days including a stunning 7&6 win in the quarter final before reaching the 36-hole final which they comfortably won 4&3 despite having to give the opposition nine shots.

Midweek Medal

SOME familiar names finished in the prizes of the latest midweek medal at Cirencester Golf Club.

Low handicap golfers Mitch Caunt and Fergus Marchington battled it out for the top position with Mitch’s net 67 good enough to sneak it over the net 68 from Fergus.

Mark Foster finished in a clear third position with a very steady net 69. Robert Preddy’s net 72 proved to be good enough to secure fourth place.

Marchington had the satisfaction of posting the best gross score, his 68 just being sufficient to beat arch rival Caunt on countback.

Cirencester B 2 Burford B 4

THE B Team match against local rivals Burford is always one members look forward to but the visitors turned out to be too strong for the re-shaped home team despite four of the six matches going to the 18th hole.

Captain Jonathan Wells and new partner Andy Ponting managed to end their match all square as did the next pairing out, Martin Harrison & Keith Hodgson.

Unfortunately, the pairings of Nigel Curtis & David Michael and Clive Gray & Paul Jenkins both lost their matches 1 down.

In a relatively rare turn of events, Duncan Barnes & Paul Simmonds lost their match 3&2 before Andrew Miles and David Murray suffered the heaviest defeat of the day with a 4&3 loss.
