CIRENCESTER hope to be a force to be reckoned with when they kick off the inaugural Walking Football League in Gloucestershire at the Abbeydale Community Centre on Wednesday (September 2) between 6pm and 9.30pm.
The Cirencester team has been renamed Phoenix Force after the Force Brewery in Cirencester’s Love Lane became their principal sponsors.
Walking football is a six-a-side version of the game for the over-50s and, as the name suggests, it is played at walking pace. Break into a run and you concede a free kick to the opposition.
The Gloucestershire FA has formed a league for the 2015/16 and seven teams will be involved: Phoenix Force from Cirencester, Malmesbury Marauders, Brimscombe Inside Football, Stroud, Abbeymead Rovers (Gloucester), Bristol City A and Bristol City B.
Four separate tournaments have been scheduled, the first being at the Abbeydale Community Centre in Gloucester.
The Cirencester Arena hosts its tournament on Tuesday, November 24 (10am-1.30pm) to be followed by Inside Football, Brimscombe on Sunday, February 28 (1pm-4.30pm) and the GFA headquarters in Almondsbury on Thursday May 19 (10am-1.30pm).
Spectators and new players are always welcome and admission to the tournaments is free.
