JONJO O’NEILL junior rode his first winner on a great day for his dad’s Jackdaws Castle stables at Worcester yesterday.
Cheltenham College pupil Jonjo, who has ridden plenty of winners in pony races, gained his first success under rules as an amateur rider in the last race at Worcester aboard Temple Lord (7-2).
Fellow stable amateur Michael Walton, riding Presence Felt (9-2), also gained his debut success on the card in which Jonjo senior sent out four winners from as many runners at the combined odds of 1,125-1.
The other two O’Neill stable winners were Clubs Are Trumps (6-1) and Amuse Me (11-1). Three of the four successes came in the colours of Jonjo’s landlord JP McManus.
New stable jockey Barry Geraghty, who has taken over the McManus contract from 20-times champion AP McCoy, chose to ride at McManus’s local track Limerick instead – where he was out of luck.
