Jubilee Cup

DESPITE having to cope with the noise of overhead aircraft from RIAT, the later starters in the Jubilee Cup at Cirencester Golf Club on Sunday were compensated as they enjoyed the sunshine and blue skies as the day wore on.

The unusual “Bogey” format of the competition is not often encountered by golfers but is, in the author’s opinion, one of the most challenging and enjoyable.

In essence, the competitors play matchplay against the par of the course. Net birdies or better on a hole count as a win (+), net pars a half (0) and any other score over par simply a loss (-).

Once the scores on each hole are added together, a total score of +1 or more is counted a win by that margin eg +3 would be a 3up win. The competitor with the highest margin of holes won is the winner.

Given the conditions on Sunday, good scores were inevitable with Stuart Park leading the field thanks to a magnificent score of +5.

He was closely followed by the recent Victory Cup winner Lee Johnson with a score of +4. Jonathan Cowley, Magnus Flett and Alan Selby were all tied on +2, their respective positions in the order given above being decided on countback.

Friendly

Cirencester B 4½ The Warwickshire B 1½

THE B Team may have found the magic formula as they returned to winning ways with an emphatic win in their friendly match at home to The Warwickshire.

Team captain Jonathan Wells and stalwart Duncan Barnes led the way with a fine 4&2 win in their match, only to be followed by wins by Andrew Miles and Steve Springthorpe (2&1) and Mike Davis and John Morris (3&2).

The wheels appeared to be coming off when Paul Simmonds and Mike Stopps crashed to a heavy 6&4 defeat. However, the baton was quickly picked up by Chris Nevin and John Parsons winning 3&2 and the final pairing of Keith Hodgson and Stewart Osborn earning a well fought half.

Gloucestershire Association

ON Wednesday, July 15 Cirencester hosted the Gloucestershire Golf Union (GGU) Members Association golf day over 36 holes.

After the event the president of the GGU, Ian Cornwell and the secretary, Michael Doyle-Davidson thanked Cirencester Golf Club for the day which they thought was very successful in all departments.

They thanked the greens staff for the excellent preparation and the condition of the course, the bar staff and the catering manager and the girls for all their hard work which was very well received.

They also wished to convey their thanks to the members of Cirencester GC for giving up their course and excellent new facilities for the enjoyment of those taking part in the Association Day. Many of the participants have stated their intention to return again soon.
