ASHTON KEYNES YFC U13 girls' team have won the league and cup double for the second season in a row.

The team's success in the Wiltshire County League is particularly noteworthy as they have been beating sides with much bigger catchments areas like Chippenham, Westbury and Melksham.

In total, the girls fired in 67 goals this season and conceded just 14. The campaign culminated with a 5-1 cup final victory over Chippenham.

Manager Rob Andrews said: "The success of the team is a reflection of everyone involved in the club, and particularly the efforts the club has made to nurture and promote girls football.

"Over the last four years we have steadily built up the girls' sections and now have four teams competing in league football.

"In total we have around 50 girls and we pride ourselves on having a set-up that encourages girls to play football in either mixed teams, or in girls' only teams.

"All at AKYFC are extremely proud of our girls."

Moving up to nine-a-side football this season from seven-a-side failed to stop their momentum.

"In retaining both their league and cup trophies, the girls played 13 games, winning 11 and losing only one, a great achievement as eight of the games were played away from home," said Andrews.

"Encouragingly for the club, there are more girls following on at U12s, U11s and younger and the club would welcome any new players for next year."
