MALMESBURY’S Danny Kent rode one of the most mature races of his career at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans and was able to extend his lead in the Moto3 world championship standings.

The 20-year-old put in a stunning performance from a disappointing 31st position on the grid as he made up 14 positions in just the opening lap.

Kent was then able to focus on his goal of joining the leading group and was up and fighting for a podium spot on lap 18 of 24.

Despite his best efforts the Leopard Racing Honda rider was unable to secure a place on the podium spot as it was an Italian lock-out headed by Romano Fenati, who was securing his first win of the season.

In its way Kent's ride was every bit as impressive as as any of his three Grand Prix wins in 2015 as he made up an astonishing number of places.

He briefly raced into a podium place at one point in the latter stages but the three Italians were always going to prove difficult to pass.

Kent's problems occurred due to a tactical error from his Leopard Racing team who attempted to second guess the weather during qualifying.

Kent had posted the fastest times in both Free Practice one and two but it started raining in the first five minutes of qualifying and Leopard opted for a small extra wait before sending their riders out in the hope of a clear track.

The decision back-fired with championship leader Kent having to settle for 31st, while his team-mates Efren Vazquez and Hiroki Ono also suffered qualifying in 29th and 32nd respectively.

Vazquez had been on pole in France last season.

Although disappointed not to bring a trophy home, Kent was thrilled with his performance at the legendary Le Mans circuit.

“This feels like a victory after starting down in 31st place," said Kent.

"We knew it would be a tough race but I managed the opening laps very well and as soon as I got my rhythm, step by step, I came closer to the front.

"But I’d pushed my rear tyre pretty much to catch the group. If we’d had a good qualifying I think I had the pace to pull away again, but with today’s fourth place we have gained valuable championship points, and most importantly extended our lead to 37 points.

"I think we can be happy with the outcome of this weekend.”
