Past Captains’ Day

THE annual past captain’s day was held on Friday May 15 with 13 past captains entering teams of four players.

Fortunately, the bad weather of the previous day was a distant memory and the event was played in calm and often sunny conditions.

Although injury prevented Trevor Hing (captain in both 2007 and 2015) from playing, it meant he was able to host drinks at the halfway house.

The combined team stableford event was closely contested with two groups posting 105 points.

The team of past captain Malcolm Bevan, ably assisted by Richard Fenton-Jones, Dave Flynn and Mark Clayton just took top spot on countback (last six holes) from the low handicap team of Howard Priest, Steve Bishop and Nick Brown, led by former captain Mark Priest.

Third place was taken by the senior team of Ben Marsh, R Gardner and Brian Hobbs headed by the godfather, Philip Franklin.

An enjoyable and convivial dinner and prize giving were held in the clubhouse afterwards.

Defence Academy B 5

Cirencester B 0

THERE was nothing defensive about the team put together by the Defence Academy as they came out all guns blazing in their B team match against Cirencester to blow the visitors away.

The normally forceful and dependable combination of Cirencester B captain Jonathan Wells and Brian Kelly went down 2&1 in the initial match, before the rest of the team went on to be blitzed.

John Davis & Derek Stewart lost 3&2, Clive Gray & Howard Jones lost 6&4, before Martin Harrison & Paul Simmonds lost by an 'arm and a leg' 7&6.

To end a thoroughly miserable day’s play for the visitors, the final pairing of David Michael and Kevin Young lost 4&2.

However, the result was soon forgotten given an excellent meal in the Mess washed down with NAAFI-priced beer!

Cheer up my hearties, we’ll be ready for them at the home leg.

April Medal

THE April Medal was well supported by 77 members doubtless attracted by the prospect of representing the club at a regional qualifier for the Lombard Trophy, a national pro-am championship.

The winner Kyle Outram will be nominated to play with Cirencester pro Ed Goodwin at the Little Aston qualifier on May 29.

Dan Skinley could only finish runner-up on countback despite scoring an eagle on the 17th hole.

Ellett Cup

THE 2104/15 Ellett Cup was won by Jonathan Cowley who beat Andrew Parffrey in the final.
