ELITE cycle racing is coming to the streets of Cirencester.

Following the huge popularity of the Tour of Britain, Women's Tour and last week's Tour de Yorkshire, the town is to host the inaugural Via Roma Cirencester Nocturne on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31.

The nation’s best racing cyclists will compete through the closed roads of the ancient Roman town centre of Cirencester before finishing in the Market Place outside of the Church of St. John the Baptist.

The race has the full backing of the Cotswold District Council and Cirencester Town Council.

"This will one of the biggest and most exciting cycle races to hit the South region," said Grant Bayton, British Cycling's regional events officer for the area.

"There will be a series of four races taking place throughout the evening with a youth race, a National B support race and a corporate relay event, culminating in the prestigious Elite race with a dramatic backdrop as it will take place under floodlights as dusk settles."

Via Roma Cirencester Nocturne itinerary: 18.00 – U16 & U14 racers: 30 Minutes; 19.00 – 2nd, 3rd & 4th category racers: 40 minutes; 20.00 – Corporate Relay, teams of five racers: 30 minutes; 21.00 – Elite race: 1 hour.
