Wally Smith Cup

Tetbury Town U12s 2 Hardwicke U12s 1

A FIRST-HALF wonder goal from Owen Pond and a second-half strike from Oscar Purnell were enough to help Tetbury lift the Wally Smith Cup for the first time.

Tetbury eventually took the lead midway through the first half when Pond latched on to a bouncing ball and coolly lifted it over the despairing keeper's dive. Tetbury continued to press but the visitors were always a threat on the counter attack. However, Billy Montague and captain Jack Munday were commanding at the heart of Tetbury's defence.

Tetbury looked set to lead 2-0 at the break when awarded a penalty but the spot kick hit the woodwork.

At the start of the second half Harry Purnell and Benjamin Sharpe were causing problems down both wings and a perfectly weighted pass from Harry put his brother Oscar through on goal and his deflected shot made it 2-0.

With legs tiring, Josh Frodsham and Bailey Spencer were introduced to freshen things up and Tetbury could have added to their lead on a number of occasions – a shot from Oscar Purnell went inches wide and a long-range effort from Klara Fletcher was expertly saved.

Hardwicke found a way back into the contest late on in glorious fashion when a wonder strike left Tetbury keeper Reece Maddy helpless.

Tetbury subsequently limited Hardwicke to few opportunities, indeed they looked the more likely team to score as the game came to a close.
