CIRENCESTER ABC enjoyed mixed fortunes when sending two boxers to a show hosted by the Cymcarn ABC at the Maes Manor Hotel in Blackwood, Wales on Friday.

Dave Davis won an entertaining, all-action bout against Josh Edwards from the local club, while Freddie Nicoll looked very unlucky to lose a split decision against tough Welsh southpaw Shane Goodall from Penyrheol ABC.

From the opening bell Edwards tried to rough up Davis with flurries of punches, while Davis caught his opponent with left and right hands.

The Welsh boxer wanted to keep the contest at close range, but the Cirencester lad did superbly to drive Edwards back.

In the second round Edwards was warned for a low punch but Davis was catching him with some hard combination shots of his own and he took an unanimous points decision.

Nicoll, in the 69kg category, made history for Cirencester ABC by becoming the first senior boxer to represent them.

Nicoll opened by landing stiff left-handed punches while his rival was looking for big shots to take the Cirencester boxer out.

Nicoll kept his guard high throughout the bout boxing cleverly behind the jab. Nicoll caught Goodall with some cracking combination punches which rocked the Welsh boy as both fighters showed off some superb boxing skills.

In the last round Nicoll caught his opponent with a five-punch combination only for Goodall to battle back gamely.

Even the local crowd showed their disapproval of the decision which gave the Welsh boxer a split-points victory, which seemed very harsh on Nicoll.

ABA coach Simon Knowles said: "Dave did very well against a very strong Welsh boxer and is improving all the time.

"My heart goes out to Freddie, we all know that he should have been awarded the win.

"He showed a lot of promise and put in three rounds of excellent boxing."
