Wiltshire Premier League

Devizes Town 1

Malmesbury Vics 5

WITH the teams above them involved in cup matches, Malmesbury Vics had a chance of leapfrogging into first place of The Wilts Premier League over the weekend.

The Vics, with the wind at their backs, surged forward from the off.

They almost carved out an opening in the the third minute when a perfectly weighted pass from Allan Webb found Sam Parker, whose shot was well saved with a Sam Jenners follow up drive flying narrowly wide.

The pace of the Malmesbury forwards caused panic in the home defence, with wave after wave of attacks.

The home side conceded in the 23rd minute when a through ball from Webb found Parker who drove his shot wide of the keeper.

Ten minutes later the lead was doubled when a long throw-in by Ewen Kenny, headed on by Ed Wilkins, was truck home by Webb.

The visitors went three up inside forty minutes, when Paul Baines received a pass from Wilkins and finished well.

Right on half time Wilkins changed from assistant to scorer with a fine finish, after good work by Jenner.

The lead was almost increased three minutes into the second half when Parker ran through, but his measured shot struck the crossbar and a Webbs follow up drive was expertly saved.

Devizes, to their credit, still tried to play football; and with the wind now in their favour, went in search of goals.

Their endeavour was justly rewarded after 63 minutes when a corner to the far post was headed back to Lee Jackson to drill the ball into the net.

The Vics' four goal advantage was restored in the 69th minute when Will Picter, after a good run down the left, found Parker in space to score easily.

The visitors, with so many games coming up, were happy to keep possession and run the clock down and left the game comfortable winners.
