Wiltshire Premier League

Malmesbury Victoria 2

Wroughton 1

AN ALAN Griffin brace was enough to secure the points for Malmesbury, in their quest to win The Wilts Premier League.

The Vics almost snatched the lead in the first minute when a Jake Fortune header brought loud appeals for a goal, but the referee deemed the ball had not crossed the line.

Two minutes later Ant Brown was unlucky with another header.

The pressure was all on Wroughton and they finally conceded in the 11th minute, when their keeper fumbled a Paul Bains free kick and Griffin swooped to fire home.

The home side were constantly on the attack, but were caught out in the 20th minute when Wroughton squared the game.

A Chris Rivers free kick was met by Paul Carson, who expertly volleyed home from the edge of the box.

Malmesbury swept back into attack, with Danny Cook and Fortune twice being denied by the visiting keeper, who made amends for his earlier error.

The breakthrough came in the 44th minute when a deflected shot from Ewen Kenny fortunately ran to Griffin who made no mistake in finishing.

Following the restart Wroughton tried to get more players forward and thought they had equalised in the 55th minute, only to be denied by the assistant for offside.

The Vics were content to keep possession and run down the clock, but almost increased their lead when Sam Parker was thwarted by the keeper, after Kenny and Fortune had carved out an opening in the 78th minute.

The final whistle came with the home side’s unbeaten run continuing and three more points under their belts.
