THE two Gloucester sides played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw in the final of the first local Walking Football tournament which took place at Inside Football, Brimscombe on Wednesday, March 18.

The Gloucester sides were firm favourites having reached the national finals at Derby in the autumn, and they contained several ex-Cheltenham Town, Forest Green and Gloucester City players.

Cirencester pipped their local rivals Malmesbury 2-1 in the third-fourth place play-off.

The competition was well supported with nine teams taking part – Brimscombe (2), Cheltenham, Gloucester (2), Clevedon, Malmesbury, Cirencester and Cherwell – and 54 participating players, who were all aged over 50 and generally in their mid-60s.

Sides were split into two groups, with the top two in each group playing each other in the semi finals.

Judging by the enthusiasm and enjoyment displayed at Brimscombe this will be just the first of many local Walking Football events.

A weekly session is held at the Arena, Cirencester every Friday afternoon at 4pm (fee £3 per player).
