GLOUCESTER director of rugby David Humphreys admitted his side were lacking the killer instinct that perhaps would have seen them over the line on another day after Wasps triumphed 32-21 at the Ricoh Arena, writes Dan Gillott.

Wasps were made to do it the hard way after being under pressure for most of the first half, but late tries from Rob Miller and Elliot Daly gave them an unlikely lead at half-time, after Gloucester flanker Ross Moriarty and Tom Young – who left Kingsholm last May – exchanged earlier scores.

Young went over again just after the interval to seal the bonus point, and despite some heavy pressure from the Cherry & Whites that saw Henry Purdy go over, Guy Thompson came off the bench to score again and seal Wasps' fourth league win from four at the Ricoh.

Gloucester now face an uphill battle to reach the top half of the Aviva Premiership table as they trail seventh-placed Sale Sharks by eight points.

But Humphreys singled out Chiseldon's Jonny May for praise after the returning wing was dropped by England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

Humphreys said: “We lacked composure and when opportunities come, Wasps are probably one of the best in the league at finishing off small chances.

“We just have not got that killer edge yet and that is something we want to work on.

"It has been a difficult week for Jonny May but credit to him, he has come into our group and brought huge enthusiasm to training.

“He was looking forward to playing and he nearly set us up for a typical Gloucester try from nothing.”

And despite seeing his son Tom charge over for two tries and be named man-of-the-match, Wasps boss Dai Young chose instead to focus on a sloppy overall performance.

"Something we have talked about is to keep our home record in the Premiership intact, which is hugely important for us,” he said.

"But I have to be honest, it was a pretty scrappy performance from us. We were very ordinary in parts but to come away with a win, let alone a bonus-point win, I am really pleased.”
