New College Academy 0 Purton 4

PURTON'S 11-game unbeaten sequence came to an end last week but they bounced with an emphatic 4-0 victory at New College on Saturday, writes Alan Eastwood.

The only goal of the first period came two minutes before the interval when a deep ball into the box was brilliantly brought down and swept home by Purton's Blaine Fitzgerald.

Prior to the goal, despite the home side forcing keeper Johnny Cowley into a couple of smart saves, Purton should have been well ahead.

Fitzgerald, whose pace was giving the home defence nightmares, had two efforts blocked and went close with two other efforts, while Lee Toomey missed a sitter from six yards.

In the second half it was much the same as the Purton defence and midfield were in full control.

Steven May added a second goal on 50 minutes with a low, hard 18-yard shot and four minutes later Fitzgerald added a third with a clinical finish.

He then completed his hat-trick when taking advantage of a mix-up in New College defence to make it 4-0.

It could have been double that score had more efforts not been blocked, saved or missed by a whisker.

The hosts had only one real chance in the second half which was blazed over the bar from five yards.
