SUNNYHILLBOY, runner-up in the 2012 Grand National at Aintree, has been retired.

The Gloucesterhire-trained gelding was beaten a nose by the grey Neptune Collonges, the narrowest defeat in the history of the world famous steeplechase.

He was being prepared for another crack at the race in April but trainer Jonjo O'Neill and owner JP McManus have now decided to call it a day with the 12-year-old after he was well beaten at Haydock last weekend.

He will spend his retirement at McManus's Martinstown Stud in County Limerick.

Winner of nine of his 29 career starts, including the Kim Muir Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, Sunnyhillboy amassed just under £400,000 in prize money.
