ZARA PHILLIPS was out of luck with her two runners at the Heythrop Hunt point-to-point run for the second time at Cocklebarrow Farm near Aldsworth on Sunday.

But there was a popular local success when Chipping Norton-based Chris Marriott, who has been secretary of this meeting for many years, won the Members' Race with his home-bred Dabinett Moon.

The seven-year-old shaped well on her debut at Larkhill but faced a difficult task against Moorland Sunset and Be Definite. All four runners were in with a chance entering the final mile, but rider Claire Hart conjured a great leap from Dabinett Moon at the open ditch and they never relinquished the lead from that point.

Chris and his wife Fran have had Dabinett Moon's family for more than 40 years and raced the granddam Windfall VI and all of her progeny. They have all been named with an apple theme – Dabinett being a variety of cider apple.

Tim Sage’s Perfectly Willing started a short-priced favourite for the Lord Ashton of Hyde Cup – one of the early-season Classic races in the point-to-point calendar – and the Dursley-trained gelding moved up menacingly at the final open ditch.

Say No and Schindlers Prince were snapping at his heels and with Perfectly Willing found wanting in the home straight Say No just held off the dogged challenge of the runner-up.

Sage had to settle for another placing in the Novice Riders' Race. Despite leading on the home turn, Presentandcorrect had no answer when John Smith-Maxwell swept by on Jetnova.

The winner was acquired by the Smith-Maxwells at Doncaster in January 2014, but with Mrs Smith-Maxwell hampered by a broken ankle, the training regime required a plan B so the horse was transferred to Tom Weston.

This was a second career success for 18-year-old Bromsgrove schoolboy John Smith-Maxwell, who rode with several fingers of his left-hand taped up following a visit to the local A & E department the previous evening.

Weston trained his second winner of the afternoon – and was also in the saddle – when Thoonavolla was successful in the 3-mile Maiden.

They went two lengths clear at the final open ditch but were then hampered by a loose horse which allowed My Coranna back into contention.

Given time to recover, Weston pushed his mount back into the lead entering the home straight and left the opposition trailing in their wake.

The Ladies' Race went to Shropshire raider Ballyjames who was up with the pace from the start.

Fossebridge trainer Fergal O’Brien's Tinelyra offered stern resistance in the home straight and there was little between the two horses at the final obstacle but Ballyjames stayed on well to prevail by three-quarters of a length.

The betting for the Subaru-sponsored Restricted Race indicated that Mr Jalfrazy was expected to follow up his Maiden win at Chaddesley, but Tom Weston's gelding was always struggling to get into contention and had to settle for fourth spot behind Love Manhattan.
