ENDURANCE running superstar Steve Edwards finished off his 2014 campaign at the weekend as the overall winner of the Enigma Christmas Double marathon event in Milton Keynes.

However, with finish times of 3:14.17 on Saturday and 3:21.34 on Sunday he also achieved yet another world-first milestone by recording his 500th official sub-3hr 25min marathon finish.

Back in November 2012, Steve realised his lifetime ambition by becoming the first athlete in the world to run 500 sub-3:30s however just two years later his latest achievement has now eclipsed even that 2012 success.

“I can’t believe I’ve run 50 marathons this year,” said 52-year-old Steve from Moreton-in-Marsh. He has already got 12 races scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.

Having run a lifetime total of 664 marathons, Bourton Roadrunner Steve admits his main objective for 2015 is to try and reach the 700 landmark.

“It would also be great to achieve 600 sub-3:30s and extend that particular record even further,” he said. “I need 12 more.

“It’s been another long hard year and I’m looking forward to a complete week off from racing and training and having a bit of a rest.”

Longer term, the road towards 1,000 marathons stretches ahead and only time will tell if Steve can pull off that particular mission, but for now it’s still looking possible. The dream for the ultimate world record lives on!
