South Cerney 1 Malmesbury Vics Res 3
TABLE-TOPPING South Cerney suffered only their second defeat of the league season when beaten 3-1 at home by a young Malmesbury Vics Reserves side.
Cerney started brightly and went ahead in only the second minute when Steve Andrews fired home from the spot, after a clumsy challenge from the keeper. Malmesbury's pace began to tell, however, and they were rewarded in the 18th minute when Jif Wilkins finished expertly after good work by strike partner Jordan Mathews.
A minute later the visitors took the lead when Mathews rose highest to nod the ball home.
The Cerney side pressed hard in the second period, but could find no way past a resolute Vics defence.
Indeed, it was the visitors who extended their lead after a mix-up in the home defence, which allowed Mathews to steal the ball and fire into an unguarded net.
As in the first half, both sides were guilty of some glaring misses, but it was the visitors who went home with the points.
MoN: Ashley Bryant.
