JONNY MAY scored a try against the world champions after just three minutes last Saturday, but the Gloucester winger admits he will simply be happy to get his hands on the ball more often against South Africa, writes Ryan Walters.

After seven games without an international try May was clearly in no mood to wait around any longer as he raced past Conrad Smith and Israel Dagg on the left wing to touch down his maiden England score.

However, for the remainder of the game at Twickenham, May was something of a spectator as New Zealand showed why they are world champions, the All Blacks dominating on their way to a 24-21 victory.

And while he insists having an England try to his name is a weight off his shoulders, May is determined to be more involved for the full 80 minutes as the Springboks come to town.

“It is always great to score your first try and hopefully I can go onwards and upwards from there and I am really looking forward to Saturday,” said Chiseldon's May who grew up playing his rugby with Wootton Bassett RFC.

“The try came early but I managed to get my hands on it a few times and I was quite happy with my involvement in the first half.

“But for whatever reason New Zealand took control in the second half and dominated possession and I didn’t touch the ball until the last play of the game and I think Roko (Semesa Rokoduguni) was similar as well.

“So we were frustrated, not just as wingers but as a team. They took it to us so it is just a case of playing our game and when we play our game the outside backs get out wide and get some space and get the ball a lot so that is what we are going to try and do.

“For whatever reason they came out harder in the second half and they dominated the second half and we couldn’t play our game.

“We were frustrated because we have been in that position a few times now but we can’t get too down as we have to be ready for South Africa.”

May’s try against the All Blacks certainly caught the attention, but the Gloucester man is not about to believe his own hype just yet.

“I feel like I have been around for a while now and that try was a monkey off my back and I am getting used to the plays and being involved in this team and hopefully I can just keep on improving,” he added.

“I am feeling confident as I feel I have started the season quite well and I am happy to have transferred that on to the international stage and score my first try.

“It does take the pressure off a little bit and I am feeling good in myself and being part of this team and I am looking forward to doing it again on Saturday.”
