SOME of the top polo players in Europe will be competing near Tetbury this week when the Beaufort Polo Club hosts the qualifying tournament for the Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Championships.

Teams from England, Ireland, France and Spain will battle out the 14-goal qualifiers which have been organised by the Hurlingham Polo Association from September 24-30.

The winning team will join five other nations heading for the FIP World Championships in Chile next March.

Chile, the host nation, and Argentina, the reigning FIP world champions, are already through to the finals.

John Tinsley, chairman of the international committee, said: “I am delighted that Beaufort Polo Club will host the forthcoming FIP European 14-goal championships and we look forward to welcoming the visiting teams.”

England will be represented by Pete Webb (5), William Emerson (5), Tommy Beresford (2) and George Pearson (1).

FIXTURES: Wednesday, September 24: 4pm England v Spain.

Friday, September 26: 12 noon Spain v France; 2pm England v Ireland.

Sunday, September 28: 12 noon Spain v Ireland; 3pm England v France.

Tuesday, September 30: 12 noon France v Ireland.
