NAUNTON DOWNS pro Nick Ellis was narrowly beaten in the final of the Gloucestershire & Somerset PGA Matchplay Championship – the opening event of the region's season – at Chipping Sodbury.
Ellis, who had caused an upset in the semi final when beating Cirencester head pro and No.1 seed Ed Goodwin, went down to Filton head pro Daryl Kelley 2&1.
Naunton Downs teaching pro Pete Garrett had already caused a shock in the opening round of the 16-man event by beating third seed David Haines 4&3 before going out to Andrew March in the quarter finals.
The Ellis-Goodwin match went to the 17th green where the Naunton Downs pro won 3&1.
