Captain’s Day 2014

Organised as a better ball pairs competition off 3/4 handicap, 136 players took part with Mark, his wife Liz and their two daughters providing not only refreshments at the Halfway House but an all-comers' BBQ in the evening.

A raffle on the day also raised more than £800 for Mark’s nominated charity – Cotswold Volunteers.

The runners-up spot was taken by young guns Gavin Allen and John Cowley on 46pts, with third place going to Keith Hodgson and Jonathan Wells (45). Next home came Chris Bruton and Terry Johnson on 43.

Nearest to the pin for ladies on the second hole was won by Alison Henshaw and on the 11th by Debbie Organ.

The gents' nearest the pin saw past captain Mark Priest win on the ninth, while one of the club's budding juniors, Callum Flett, was nearest on the 13th.

In addition, the captain gave a prize for nearest to the pin on the 18th which was won with a fantastic shot by Debbie Chesworth.

With excellent playing conditions, an enthusiastic membership and active support, captain Mark can be pleased with an exceptionally successful day.

Cross Country Golf

THE ninth successive Cross Country Fun competition was held on Friday evening.

The 50 participants played a team Texas Scramble over the testing par-36 course designed again by Eric Varcoe.

This resulted in some very good scores but many lost balls as the teams weaved their way across rough terrain to finish by playing the 'old 18th'.

The winners with an incredible gross score of 29 (net 25.7) were the Kelly team of Alison, Brian, Mike and their friend Nick Brown.

Runners-up on countback with 27.4 were Mark Woodhead, Gerry Bruton, Eric Varcoe and Eric's grandson Josh Hutchinson.

A gallant third place went to the team of Chris Park, Julie Clough, Sheila Marsh and Terry Johnson.

Just off the rostrum with 28.3 was the team led by (the other) Nick Brown, along with Darren Robison, Hamish Mason and Tom Stone. A very enjoyable evening concluded with an excellent BBQ prepared by Janice and Gerry Bruton as well as Chris Park.

A Team

Forest of Dean A 2

Cirencester A 4

THE ‘A' Team began their four-match run-in knowing that if they can win all four they would be guaranteed promotion back to Division One of the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League.

First up was a trip to the Forest of Dean. Earlier in the season Cirencester suffered a heavy defeat at home to the Forest and hopes of a reversal at the early league leaders looked slim.

However, by the end of the afternoon Cirencester had gained a deserved away win by 4-2.

Captain Duncan Barnes will next take his team to Brickhampton who, like Cirencester, also fancy their chances of promotion.

B Team

Cirencester B 5

Forest of Dean B 1

THE B team played the reverse fixture at home against Forest of Dean and won resoundingly 5-1.

Outstanding victories by the margin of 5&4 were gained by three pairs namely David Exton and big-hitting Kevin Young; Paul Jenkins and Nigel Curtis and captain Jonathan Wells and Paul Simmonds.
