Women’s County Finals

Moreton won the county singles final for the second year in a row when Rita Gerry overcame Joyce Ferson of Barnwood.

Gerry, following in the footsteps of Tilly Pearson who won it last year, had a dream start and never looked back after taking a 10-1 lead.

Ferson did hit back with a three and a two to trail by five shots at 11-6. But then Gerry hit a purple patch, winning five of the next six ends to take a commanding 19-8 lead before gaining a two to take the title 21-12.

Gerry was also in the successful county fours team alongside Jane Clarke, Jenny Stansfield and Tilly Pearson as they beat last season’s winners from Kingswood & Hanham – Val Molton, Pam Salvage, Pat Baker and Sue Osborne.

The Moreton quartet seized the initiative over the first half dozen ends to take an 8-2 lead. With the gap down to three shots they then gained a four which saw them win three out of the next four ends to move into a 16-7 lead.

Losing three ends on the trot they then bounced back with a three and two more singles to bring up about a 21-14 victory.

In the pairs it was Stansfield and Pearson who triumphed to pick up their second piece of silverware.

They won the first nine ends to go 12 shots ahead of Denise Bailey and Mavis Kennedy (Gloucester Spa).

A three on the 15th end took the score to 18-3 and they finished off with two twos for a comprehensive 22-4 win.

The Triples Final saw the Stroud team of Gill Hodder, Jean Crook and Jacky Howes beating Nailsworth 20-11.

Jacky Howes of Stroud also became a double winner beating Iona Bird (Caer Glow) in the Champion of Champions 21-10.

The Two Wood singles was won by Jeanette Scott (Cheltenham). The Unbadged final saw a thriller with Isabel Cooke (Arrow Ladies) overcoming Janet Tee (Caer Glow) 21-17.
