CRICKET: Lechlade captain Breet wary of threat from former club Westbury

Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard: Lechlade captain Joe Breet Lechlade captain Joe Breet

TOP-OF-THE-TABLE Lechlade travel to Westbury in this weekend’s round of Glos/Wilts fixtures which sees their captain Joe Breet returning to his old club.

Breet is surprised to see Westbury struggling in the relegation zone.

“Westbury were one of the pre-season favourites and I am sure with only two wins to their name so far they will be out to prove a point in the second half of the season,” said Joe. Breet is determined that his Lechlade side do not take any games for granted in the coming weeks as they push for promotion.

“Despite Westbury’s current position in the league they are a very capable side and a player like Tom Cullen on his day can be devastating with the bat so we will need to be on our guard from the outset,” said Joe.

Breet believes that the wicket at Westbury is one of the best around and one that suits his side’s set-up.

He added: “If the weather conditions are good on Saturday and the wicket is hard then we should see the best from our batting unit.

“I also think our bowling unit is performing well.

“Luke (Sellers) and Michael (Craigs) are bowling fast and economically and if pressure is applied at the start then I think Sanks (Vithanage) and Ryan (Higgins) are very capable of continuing the pressure and taking advantage of the situation.”

Lechlade name a near-full strength side for this week’s game with the return of opening batsman Freddie Martin for the unavailable Will Nichols.

Ali Killham is on standby for injured wicketkeeper Sam Burdock who dislocated a thumb in last week’s 102-run win at Tewkesbury. Lechlade will be looking to extend their eight-point lead over Rockhampton with another comprehensive win.
