CHARLES REES, riding for the Ride 24/7 team in Cirencester, finished a respectable 25th in a star-studded field for the British Time Trial Championships at the Celtic Manor resort, Monmouthshire, on Thursday.

Rees made the most of an early start on the hilly and slippery 26-mile course as the weather deteriorated.

On his maiden effort at the elite national championships he recorded a competitive time of 1hr 03min 31sec, getting the better of some big names in the domestic TT world like Paul Jones and Blake Pond.

Unfortunately, the world class riders – Sir Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas and Alex Dowsett, who had won for the last three years – came home with astonishing times to take the podium places.

Wiggins' time of 53min 56sec gave him victory over his Team Sky colleague Thomas by 68 seconds.
