Gloucestershire County Cup

Cirencester 217-7

Newent 118 all out

HALF-CENTURIES from Ben Moody and Alex Binnie plus another five-wicket haul for Jock Jamieson-Black earned Cirencester a second convincing win over the weekend as they dumped visitors Newent out of the Gloucestershire County Cup by 99 runs in the Park on Sunday.

Electing to bat on a placid surface, Cirencester were given a sound start by Moody and Will Mason who put on 85 for the first wicket before the latter edged a legside catch to keeper Jones for 20.

The aggressive Moody had hit ten fours in his 61 before he was also caught behind with the total on 119, but the 17-year-old Binnie continues to flourish and he played some neat shots as well as running well between wickets in brief but profitable stands with Jeffels and Jamieson-Black.

Newent, whose bowling had been somewhat wayward, made inroads into the Town’s middle order, but in the closing overs Binnie, who hit four fours and a six in his valuable unbeaten 59, and Matt Carter pushed the final total to 217-7 as the 40 overs elapsed.

Newent initially set about the chase in positive fashion as Evans and Jones added 40 for the first wicket before the latter was bowled by Jack Roberts for 23 and Morley then added a lively 24, but once he was caught by Mason off Jamieson-Black, the innings gradually lost momentum.

The left-arm spinner quickly claimed four more wickets and with Jeffels clean bowling two additional victims in an aggressive four-over spell Newent slumped from 77-3 to 118 all out, Bram Coleman and Jake Holmes finishing off the contest with a wicket apiece.
