STRATTON Youth Under 17/18s rounded off their excellent season by narrowly losing out to Hungerford Town in Sunday's North Wilts Youth League Cup final played at Swindon Town's County Ground.

North Wilts Youth League Cup final

Stratton Youth 1

Hungerford Town 2

Hungerford play a division higher than Stratton but it was a tight affair throughout and heavily influenced by a strong wind which made passing difficult.

Stratton thought they had scored in the first half when a rasping shot from outside of the area by Conor Smith hit the underside of the bar and appeared to cross the line, though the referee thought otherwise.

Minutes later, against the run of play, Hungerford’s Aidan Maycock took advantage of a Stratton defensive mix-up to score from eight yards and the balance of the game temporarily shifted to the scorers.

With the wind at their backs Stratton took the initiative again at the start of the second half and on 60 minutes Scott Reynolds scored what looked like a good goal only for the referee to blow for offside.

Minutes later Stratton found themselves 2-0 down as the game became stretched and Maycock scored his second.

To their credit Stratton continued to pile pressure on to the Hungerford goal and were eventually rewarded when MoM Reynolds scored with a terrific header back across the goalkeeper.

Stratton could not find an equaliser but nonetheless capped their fine season by finishing runners-up in both the league and cup
