PRIOR PARK Prep School's fencing squad has returned from the Wiltshire Fencing Championships with a six-medal haul including golds for Oliver Hodgson in the U10s and Ben Simmonds in the U12s.

Prior Park had three boys in the U10s – Hodgson, Ethan Teale and Edward Scott-Payne

Edward went out at the quarter final stage to the No.1 seed in a close match 10-7.

After both comfortably won their quarter finals, Ethan met Oliver in the semi, a repeat of their Southern Regional finals clash earlier this year.

This time the lower-seeded Hodgson gained his revenge, taking a thrilling 10-8 win.

Oliver then fought an almost perfect final to lift the championship 10-6, while Ethan went on to collect a bronze.

Oliver said: "I am so excited to win this county championship after coming close on a number of occasions and now look forward to the nationals later this year."

In the boys' U12s competition, containing a number of national-level fencers, Jubril Amzart had to settle for third despite beating his team-mate and eventual winner Ben Simmonds in the pool stages.

Ben got his tactics in the final just right, combining varied attacks and ripostes to emerge the overall U12 winner.

The U10 girls saw Niamh Preston narrowly lose 8-6 to an opponent she had faced in the Southern Regional semi finals. But she battled back to take second place after her subsequent bouts.

The girls' U14s event was fiercely competitive, with Katherine Scott-Payne putting in a great display to finish with a bronze medal. Along the way she lost only to the first- and second-placed girls.

Coach Neil Bromley said "This year's Wiltshire's Championships saw an exceptionally encouraging performance from all the Prior Park team.

"The effort and determination in winning combined with chivalry in losing was a pleasure to witness."
