A DRAW in their final game on Easter Monday will clinch the Div Two West title for the Cirencester Town Development team after their 6-2 romp against Beversbrook at the Corinium Stadium on Saturday.

On the day the first XI went top of the Calor League with two games remaining it set up the possibility of a magnificent double triumph for the Centurions.

Hellenic Div Two West leaders Wantage Town Res finished their season with a 4-0 victory at Old Woodstock Town Res so Ciren – a point behind with a game in hand and a vastly superior goal difference – have the championship firmly in their own hands.

Clive Messenger’s impressive youngsters now travel to Brimscombe & Thrupp Reserves to finish the job.

At times on Saturday, they were electric. Shane Bumphrey scored a hat-trick after being booked in the third minute and missing a penalty in the ninth.

His totally different but equally impressive strike partner Jack Smith fashioned three assists.

The other goals came from Dan Roberts, substitute Jacob Davidge – a fine solo effort – and Tim Bond.

The back four were excellent throughout and 21st birthday boy Liam O’Brien was skilful and uncompromising in equal measure.

Ciren endured a wobble late in the second half when they lost focus and Beversbrook equalised with two goals in four minutes but they reasserted their considerable superiority quickly in the second half.

Whatever happens on Monday, the next generation of Cirencester Town first-teamers is looking very strong.

Indeed, first XI boss Brian Hughes should have no fears if he has to plunder Messenger’s squad for the finale with his own team reduced to the bare bones by injuries.

There are at least half a dozen of these youngsters who would not be out of place.
