COTSWOLD primary schools took four of the five gold medals on offer in the latest round of the 2014 Gloucestershire School Games held at Cheltenham College.

More than 400 athletes from over 35 Gloucestershire schools took part in the Spring Festival as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games.

St Mary’s of Tetbury won the High 5 Netball competition, Cold Aston Primary School topped the Quicksticks Hockey podium in front of London Olympic bronze medallist Ashleigh Ball and Cirencester Kingshill School lifted gold over 10 other opponents in the Project Ability Boccia tournament run by National Star College volunteers.

Earlier, the golden glory for Cotswolds schools had started when Archie Fletcher from Blockley Primary was presented with a gold medal for his winning design in the curricular competition ‘Design a Mascot’.

Archie created ‘Old Spot’, a sporting pig named after the iconic local breed.

In the netball St Mary's won their group round, progressing to the semi finals where they beat Warden Hill Primary School.

In a much closer final against King’s School, Gloucester, St Mary’s won 3-2.

Kate Harper, team manager for St Mary’s, said: “I have really enjoyed every minute of coaching these children over the last three years. Apart from being very talented, they display great teamwork and sportsmanship.

"Being county champions means a great deal to them and I am delighted that their hard work has paid off.”

St Mary's Lion’s captain Stella Harper led her team up to receive the shield from Kelly Hull, a young GB netballer.

The team comprising Chevy Sujeewon, Klara Fletcher, Maddie Farthing, Daisy Farthing, Harry Purnell, Theo Harper and Ellie Jones all proudly received their medals.

High 5s is a fun, skilful version of netball, where players are able to rotate and adapt their skills to play in any position. The game is played by both boys and girls in Year 5 and 6.
