CIRENCESTER TOWN U16s clinched a brilliant 4-1 win over Thornbury Town to become county champions at GFA Headquarters in Almondsbury.

And in what could prove a spectacular season, the lads are still involved on three other fronts – they are in contention for the Junior Premier League play-offs, face Solihull Moors in the JPL Cup semi final and have made the North Wilts Cup Final at Swindon Town’s County Ground.

The County Cup game was played under lights in swirling wind and rain.

Thornbury adapted well, were strong in the tackle and broke with blistering pace down the flanks.

After 13 minutes a lofted ball into the box slipped out of the Cirencester keeper’s hands and dropped at the feet of a Thornbury striker who side-footed home.

Buoyed by the goal the Bristol side gradually started to take control.

Ciren were struggling to create anything until the 30th minute when the ball was played out to the right for Max Lloyd.

After looking like he had missed his opportunity Lloyd whipped over a cross to the back post where Boyan Thorpe was on hand to nod the ball back across the goal and into the corner of the net.

Ciren were suddenly on the front foot and after 35 minutes another free kick was awarded. Ben Holley delicately chipped the ball into the box where Jack Uzzell was on hand with a cheeky back header over the advancing keeper.

The second half started with the re-introduction of Josh Coombe, who had ridden a few torrid challenges in the first half, while the tireless Nouman Farooq Bhatti entered the fray to give Ciren another dimension.

From a corner Lewis Newman timed his run perfectly to stab home Ciren’s third goal.

Wave after wave of Ciren attacks were then repelled with the Thornbury keeper denying Kallum Cooper on a couple of occasions.

With the clock running down Jordan Day launched a free kick from inside his own half. With the help of the wind the ball gained momentum and dipped over the keeper’s head into the roof of the net.

The 65-yard effort capped a fantastic comeback for the new county champions.
