CLOSE friends Robert Evans and Mike Kirman came out on top in the annual Seniors Foursomes at Cirencester Golf Club, which was played on February 17.

Conditions were damp but tolerable and the course was in quite remarkable shape considering the rain it has had to endure.

In foursomes, a team of two players take alternative shots with the same ball and this dimension can be a challenge, but when a team gels it makes for a most enjoyable format. Three pairs excelled each scoring 39 stableford points.

After the countback was applied first place went to near-neighbours Evans and Kirman.

John Hall and Evan Drayton can point to some close putts on the back nine that could have made the difference between first and their second place.

Another familiar pairing, Keith Greenwood and Colin Gilbert, had an exceptional outward half scoring 23 points but just failed to capitalise and their 39 points only yielded third place.

Last year's seniors' captain, David Findlay and Andrew Somerville scored 36 points highlighted by two '2s' on holes nine and 13.

All 50 competitors sat down for an enjoyable meal after and the Foursomes Trophy was presented to the winners by Mick Barham, who initiated this competition in his year as senior captain a decade ago.
